Ephesians 5:19-20
Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
An interesting phrase – “speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs.” Not sing to one another, but speak to one another. Does this mean the same as “quote psalms and songs to each other?” Psalms, hymns and spiritual songs were probably very effective ways of memorizing and remembering passages of scripture, stories, and even theological ideas. Speak these passages to each other. I find it interesting as I am reading scripture to come across a verse or two that have been made into a chorus, and now I understand the context of that chorus, and I also immediately sing it in my head as I read. The learning and remembering is reinforced because of the activation of the senses and different memory structures of the brain.
