Galatians 2:17-19
17“If, while we seek to be justified in Christ, it becomes evident that we ourselves are sinners, does that mean that Christ promotes sin? Absolutely not! 18If I rebuild what I destroyed, I prove that I am a lawbreaker. 19For through the law I died to the law so that I might live for God.
Reading Paul is like reading Kant; by which I mean “difficult to understand”.
“If, while we seek to be justified in Christ
Isn’t this an immediate process? When our soul is saved, we are justified.
“it becomes evident that we ourselves are sinners”
We are indeed sinners.
“does that mean that Christ promotes sin?”
No, and why would it? Where’s the logical leap that says we are sinners, therefore Christ promotes sin?
“Absolutely not!”
Agreed.
“If I rebuild what I destroyed, I prove that I am a lawbreaker.”
…
… What?
…
“For through the law, I died to the law so that I might live for God.”
I understand this, in the sense that Jesus was the fulfillment of the law, so it was through the law that we are saved – but that once we are saved, we are no longer beholden to the law.
