Philippians 1:15-18
15 It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill. 16 The latter do so in love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. 17 The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains.[c] 18 But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice.
How does a person “preach Christ” out of envy and rivalry? I’m trying to imagine that. I suppose it is done in the same way that a con man uses the name of Christ to solicit donations or to swindle money. Paul says, “what does it matter? The important thing is that Christ is preached.”
And I suppose that’s true, and it’s also an important point to consider when evaluating a ministry: is Christ preached? Does the preacher spend time talking about “self-help principles” or how to be a better person, and not preach Christ? Does the preacher talk about Old Testament promises regarding God’s blessings, and not preach Christ? Does the preacher talk about miracles and healing, but not get down to the salvation of Christ?
If so, then ask yourself what’s going on.
