1 John 4:19-21
19 We love because he first loved us. 20 If anyone says, “I love God,” yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. 21 And he has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love his brother.
Such a simple idea; such a simple litmus test. Lots of people say they love God. They would probably also deny that they hate their brothers. Who, then, is your brother?
Jesus told a similar story about loving your neighbor; in that story the neighbor was a Samaritan man – the outcast and hated tribe. All good Jews hated Samaritans. And yet Jesus said, “this man is your neighbor.”
Who is your brother?
