The wedding supper

Revelation 19-22

Revelation 19:9

9 Then the angel said to me, “Write: ‘Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!’ ” And he added, “These are the true words of God.”

2009 closes and 2010 opens. What is a year? It is a man-made marker; there’s no reason to remember this particular moment in time other than that we choose to. The decade boundary passes and so we’re on the other side now, looking back at the past 10 years to see if anything meaningful happened. What will happen, will happen.

The ending sequence of Revelation piles up spectacular images into a crescendo of events. This is merely an aside – the angel says, “Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb! These are the true words of God.” The true words of God. This caused me to pause and give it a second look. Who is invited? Is this a determinism question? Or is that not the point here? (Everything can be worked into that framework if given the chance.) No, I don’t think so. The point is to talk about the wedding supper as the event of the universe: that’s the place to be. And those who are invited to attend are blessed indeed. In the midst of the bowls and the trumpets and the plagues, there’s a chance to sit back and enjoy the company of the wedding supper.
